Professional Development Opportunities can be seen here. Suggestions for Reading Month, April 2010 The suggested Reading List is available by clicking on the link. Reading Week After some discussion with other librarians and reading teachers, it seems best to consider April as reading month. We will work with the RI chapter of the International Reading Association and use the theme and week they have selected— “CATCH THE WAVES OF LITERACY” APRIL 5-9 2010 (we’ll save out Read Green theme for another time.) This will allow us to have a jump start on the theme for the state summer reading program. (The children’s theme for this coming summer is “Make a Splash – Read.” The teen theme is “Make Waves at Your Library”.) It will allow us to capitalize on National School Library Week, and it will allow schools to have some flexibility in their planning and celebratory events. Here are some things to consider for April as reading month: · National Poetry Month—host a poetry slam in the library · School Library Media Month · April 11-17 National School Library Week · April 14-20 Young People’s Poetry Week · April 21-27 TV Turn-off Week · April 9 International Children’s Book Day · April 12 D.E.A.R. Day · April 23 World Book & Copyright Day · April 30 El Dia de los Niños/El Dia de los libros* *Children’s Day/Book Day, also known as El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Día), is a celebration of children, families, and reading held annually on April 30. The celebration emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. In the past, Providence Public Library has sponsored a Bilingual Young Authors Story Writing Contest. This might be a good way to get more middle and high school students involved in the celebration of reading and provide opportunities for collaboration with the foreign language teachers.
